The US Copyright Office, Catalog of Copyright Entries, Motion Pictures, 1912-1939, has a record a Bird of Paradise with an original copyright date of August 20, 1932 for RKO-Radio Pictures, Inc. Per the law at the time, the copyright holder was to file for a renewal 28 years after the original copyright date. It seems that a renewal was never filed with the US Copyright Office (publicly available records show no entry) which allowed Bird of Paradise to fall into the public domain.
